Young up and coming filmmaker, Ali Russell, was the recipient of the Media Makers Mini Fund in May of 2007 with which she directed, produced, and edited a documentary film about Sydney’s notorious experimental music festival called ‘The NOW now’ under the mentorship of Anna Craney.

In the past year Ali has been working on several projects including,

-A short documentary, 'All the Eights, 88' made for the International Documentary Challenge which was selected as a finalist and will be screening at Hot Docs in Toronto in the weeks to come.

-A short documentary, 'My Favourite Thing' selected to screen at Little Big Shots International Film Festival for Kids in September at the Sydney Opera House

-A half-hour documentary, ‘Munda Yumadoo Iliga - Leave the Land As it is’ which is currently in development, about 4 generations of Indigenous women from the remote South Australian desert fighting to protect their sacred sites from mining

-A music video for Sydney electro band ‘Press Eject

Later this week Ali will be heading to Toronto, Canada to attend the International Hot Docs Film Festival where she will have a chance to meet and network with filmmakers from around the world, before coming back to Sydney to take up a full-time residency at sQuareOne. We will be holding a celebration night for her later in the year along with a screening of some of her work.

‘The NOW now’ screens tonight at 8pm in Chippendale at Serial Space 33 Wellington Street.

sQuareOne and Vibewire would like to congratulate Ali on her remarkable achievements over the past year as a truly inspiring emerging independent filmmaker.
