Vibewire announces Melbourne Media Makers 2008 mini-fund recipients

Following on from Vibewire's successful Melbourne Media Makers 2008 workshop series, five young people have been chosen to produce four mini-media projects in the space of a month.

Launching their Story To project, Beth Keating and Kate Nicholson will produce a transport-themed zine that will be distributed at train stations around Melbourne. Gemma White will make a poetry zine, Velveteen, which will publish new and emerging poets as well as document her own explorations of Melbourne's literary community. During his travels to Paris and Berlin, Tom Rigby will explore sonic tourism by keeping a blogcast – i.e. blog postings and podcasts about his experiences. Alexander Mann will be speaking to young people from different cultural backgrounds to produce a CD and recipe booklet.

The four mini-media projects will be showcased in July, with excerpts to be published on the website www.vibewire.net. "The mini-projects are a fascinating exploration of different cultures and sub-cultures within the wider youth community," said Lisa Pham, project coordinator for the Melbourne Media Makers 2008 program. "It's also a great way for the mini-fund recipients to get some professional development and learn the basics of project management."

"Vibewire is committed to providing peer-to-peer learning opportunities that allow young people to pursue their creative ambitions," said Nathan Frick, Vibewire CEO.

The Melbourne Media Makers 2008 workshop series consisted of intensive short courses introducing participants to zines, freelance writing, video production, podcasting and design. Learning where to distribute their work and how to use industry-standard software such as Final Cut Pro, Audacity, Photoshop and InDesign, the workshops gave participants an accelerated understanding of how to make their creative idea into a practical reality.

Vibewire is a non-profit youth media organisation providing creative opportunities for young people. Other Vibewire projects include ElectionTracker, the Reelife Film Festival and Interface anthology.

The Melbourne Media Makers 2008 program is funded by the City of Melbourne and supported by Express Media, SYN FM, Open Channel and the Foundation for Young Australians.
