sQuareOne is a creative and community project incubator situated in Sydney’s media district of Ultimo. It’s an open-plan office designed to facilitate the creation of youth media, arts and community projects, promoting youth people’s expression, participation and innovation.

s1 text logo is:

  • A hub of youth community engagement and expression and a meeting point of projects and organisations;

  • An incubator of new projects and organisations;

  • A training, event and exhibition venue;

  • An office space and resource for youth media, arts and community workers and practitioners

And more! It’s where people get activated and ideas become reality. It is where young people create their own initiatives and outlets to respond to the needs they perceive and experience. It’s somewhere young people can meet with each other, access and exchange information, utilise information technology and share views on issues affecting themselves and their communities. It is a place that values and embraces the contribution of young people to our society and culture, where young people can create and share innovative ideas, build relationships and form connections with their communities.

Many fantastic initiatives have been started by young people in Sydney. However, they are generally under-resourced and have to struggle against enormous odds. While most young people looking for a job have access to a range of services which provide personalised career advice, there are no equivalent services available to young people wanting to make a contribution to their community. The process of learning from your mistakes takes time and patience, and most young people are not fortunate enough to have the money to pay for the phone calls, net access, and photocopying expenses involved in getting a new project off the ground. Youth-to-youth training and facilitation is a more empowering and accessible form of 'mentorship' for most young people than that provided in a more official capacity by established, adult-run, service-oriented organisations.
